Windows Doesn't Detect GPS Angel When Plugged In

Support Staff October 27, 2009

The GPS Angel Manager software cannot update the database on your unit if Windows is unable to detect the device when it is plugged in to your computer. This may be caused if your device isn't properly connected, isn't connected to a primary USB port, or the necessary software driver isn't installed.

To Properly Connect GPS Angel To Your Computer

  • Plug the flat end of the power cable into a USB port.
  • Plug the other end of the power cable FIRMLY into the side of the GPS Angel.

You should hear a chime and see lights on the GPS Angel.
Windows may also display a "new hardware detected" message on the lower right of your screen.

If Windows doesn't detect your device, try ALL available USB ports - one after the other.

To Verify And Install The Proper Driver

You may need to install the proper driver. Follow these instructions.

1. Plug the GPS Angel into the first USB port on your computer.
2. Open the Windows "Device Manager" (you can go to Start > Search to find it).
3. Check under the "Ports (COM & LPT)" section to see if there's an entry for "Prolific USB-to-Serial (COM3)".

GPS Angel USB-to-Serial Driver Installed

If there is not an entry for the Prolific USB-to-Serial then leave your GPS Angel plugged into your computer and proceed to step 4.
If there is and it doesn't have a yellow warning symbol, you have the proper driver.

4. Download the driver installer and save it to your desktop.
5. After it downloads, unzip it and run the installer.
6. After the installer completes restart your computer.

After the computer restarts, open the Device Manger and select "Scan for hardware changes" from the "Action" menu.

You should now see an entry for "Prolific USB-to-Serial (COM3)" under the "Ports (COM & LPT)" section in the Device Manager.

Windows should now be able to detect the GPS Angel.

Launch the GPS Angel Manager software and follow the instructions.
